Exactly who were some of the famous Civil War people that the West End streets (west of Quaker Lane to the western boundary of Alexandria, north to Route 7 and south to the Beltway) are named for? One was a former Vice President of the US who became a Confederate General; another was a failure as a Union general but had a local university named after him. Another was chief of Confederate secret operations in Washington, and another allowed his men to collect scalps after a battle. One was a scout for the famous Gray Ghost of the Confederacy, and another was the grandson of a man who rode with Paul Revere on his famous Midnight Ride. We will look at some of the streets.
Mr. Kim Holien has been a resident of the West End of Alexandria since March of 1954. His 41 years in Federal Service included 35 years as a professional US Army historian. One of his three specialized areas was the Civil War, in which he had ancestors on both sides. He has a BS from Bethel College (now University) in the Broad Area of Social Sciences (ie, he majored in eight fields) and an MA in Civil War History from George Mason University under Dr. Joe Harsh.
