Title:Emancipation USA: Exploring Juneteenth
Date & Time:Sat Jun 15, 2019 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Location:Alexandria Black History Museum, 902 Wythe St. (Map This)
Event Details:Emancipation events were some of the most important celebrations in the African American community in the late nineteenth century. No matter where they occurred, these festivals of freedom also commemorated community achievements and individuals, served as acts of resistance in a sea of racial repression and violence, provided occasions for political strategy sessions, and served as safe havens for the transmission of valuable history to the younger generations. Join historian C.R. Gibbs as he provides new insights into the celebration of Juneteenth in Texas as well our regional emancipation observances here in Virginia, as well as in D.C., and Maryland.
