Archaeologists have uncovered the foundations of Pioneer Mill at the former site of Robinson Terminal South. Pioneer Mill was one of the largest steam-powered flour mills in the United States. Built in 1854, the mill was advertised as six stories high with twelve mill stones and a 250 horsepower steam engine. Because of its size and location, the building dominated the Alexandria waterfront for more than 50 years before it was destroyed by fire in 1897. Multiple owners put the building to different industrial uses after the Civil War. The Robinson Terminal Warehouse Company built storage facilities on the former site of Pioneer Mill in the 1940s.
