This workshop will include information on the difference between historic and modern masonry, the effect of moisture on masonry walls, and the proper mortar to use on soft historic brick. Live demonstrations of brick repointing, paint removal, cleaning and maintenance will provide opportunities to ask the experts questions and learn about best practices for maintaining historic masonry buildings.
Mark Vaughan, founder, and Edward Wall, at Vaughan Restoration Masonry, are specialists in masonry restoration. VRM is based in Alexandria and has worked throughout the City cleaning, repairing, removing paint from and preserving masonry on some of Alexandria’s most historic buildings including: 107 King Street (Fish Market), 22 S Fairfax Street, 1201 King Street, and 1707 Duke Street (Bruin Slave Jail).
Jessica Aquiline, Conservation Specialist, at LimeWorks.us a full service company committed to providing historically appropriate mortars for professional masonry restoration. Jessica received her Masters of Science in Historic Preservation from the University of Pennsylvania (2013) and her BA in Historic Preservation at the University of Mary Washington (2010).
