Learn about the use of aerial balloons for military reconnaissance during the Civil War, and the little known balloon ascensions that occurred in the West End during the war. The program features a reenactor portraying period aeronaut Thaddeus Lowe, and a partially inflated netted gas balloon.

Event Details:Learn about the use of aerial balloons for military reconnaissance during the Civil War, and the little known balloon ascensions that occurred in the West End of Alexandria early in the war. The program features a reenactor portraying period aeronaut Thaddeus Lowe, and a partially inflated netted gas balloon. Reenactors, demonstrations and soldier life activities are included. Program includes Union and Confederate re-enactors, drills and camp life activities. This free event is weather dependent.
