Location:Lyceum

Event Details:"I don't like to talk about it - or even think about it" George Washington and Slavery. As George Washington matured, the desire for secular immortality – fame across the ages- was a driving force in shaping his life and influenced virtually every aspect of his life from slaveholder, to soldier, to President, to his final moments. In this brief interpretative biography covering Washington's entire life, including an Afterword on Washington and slavery, Professor Henriques attempts to make Washington understandable to a larger audience that might not have the patience to read some of the larger works focusing on America's most important leader. Peter R. Henriques received his Ph.D. in history from the University of Virginia and is Professor of History, Emeritus, from George Mason University. He taught American and Virginia history with a special emphasis on the Virginia Founding Fathers, especially George Washington. His latest book, George Washington: His Quest for Honor and Fame, is his fourth book addressing various aspects of Washington's life and character. His earlier works are The Death of George Washington: He Died as He Lived; Realistic Visionary: A Portrait of George Washington; and First and Always: A New Portrait of George Washington. He has presented the Distinguished Lecture Series at Colonial Williamsburg, been awarded a George Washington Fellowship by the Mount Vernon Ladies Association, and won the George Washington Masonic Memorial Award for his contributions to the study of George Washington.
