This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Studies show that the majority of misused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from home medicine cabinets. In addition, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of unused medication, often flushing it down the toilet or throwing it away – both potential safety and health hazards.

Drug take back days and permanent drop boxes also support the goals of the Eco-City Alexandria initiative to promote a place where people can live healthier and economically productive lives, while reducing their impact on the environment.

The service is free and anonymous; no questions asked.
