Event Details:The Ellen Pickering award, presented by AlexRenew and the Environmental Policy Commission, recognizes community members that have had significant, positive impacts on our environment.
Join us at the Del Ray GardenFest, hosted by the Del Ray Citizens Association, to celebrate the award recipient’s achievements in helping protect our environment and enjoy a fun, free, educational afternoon of garden-centric demonstrations, informational booths, and activities!

  • Ellen Pickering Environmental Excellence Award
    The award is named in honor of Ellen Pickering's lifelong dedication to preservation and conservation in the City of Alexandria. Mrs. Pickering was a longtime City activist who first gained recognition for her lobbying efforts more than 40 years ago that ultimately helped create the Mount Vernon Trail between Alexandria and Washington, DC.
  • Environmental Policy Commission
    Established in 1970 by the Alexandria City Council under Chapter 4, Article M, of the City Code, the Alexandria Environmental Policy Commission (EPC) advises and makes recommendations to the City Council and, where appropriate, to the Planning Commission and City Manager, on matters relating to the following as defined in the EPC Bylaws: The Climate crisis and its effects Clean air Land use Noise pollution Pesticides, herbicides and contaminants Solid waste Water quality and supply Other topics relating to conservation and protection of environmental conditions in the City of Alexandria, and Such other matters as may from time to time be referred to it by the City Council.

  • Del Ray GardenFest
    GardenFest is a fun, free, educational afternoon of garden-centric demonstrations, informational booths, and activities! Celebrate sunshine and springtime by learning about all sorts of gardening topics, including at-home composting, growing native plants, beekeeping, and much more!
