Event Details:To commemorate the 250th anniversary of organized firefighting in the City of Alexandria and the surrounding region, the Friendship Veterans Fire Engine Association is hosting a one-day symposium on the 15th of September, 2024. The symposium will be held at the George Washington Masonic Memorial on Shooter's Hill at the top of King Street.

The symposium will consist of three panels, each of which will have two or more presenters offering presentations of no more than twenty minutes each on topics related to the history of firefighting in Alexandria and environs, historical or notable emergencies to which first responders were called to action, and the evolution of best firefighting practices over the past 250 years. Each panel will conclude with questions and comments from the audience.

The event is open to the public without charge. Prior registration is requested. To register, contact Jim McClellan at jimmiemcclellan@gmail.com.

10:15 am first panel: "The Great Fire of 1827" (Dr. Jim McClellan) and "The Fire of 1855 and the Memorial at Ivy Hill" (Catherine Weinraub). 11:30 am second panel: "Elsworth's Zouaves and Unit's Activities in and Around Alexandria During the Civil War" (Clarence Jewell III) and "The Market Hall Fire of 1871: It's Impact on National Freemasonry and Alexandria's Skyline" (Chris Ruli). 1:30 pm third panel: "Life and Times of Alexandria Fire Chief George Petty" (Chief Robert Dube), "It is But Yesterday - Preserving Alexandria's Fire History in the National Museum" (Tim Winkle), and "AFD and the Pentagon on 9/11" (Chief James Swartz).
