Have unwanted and expired prescription medications? Dispose of them safely at the “Drug Take-Back” to prevent pill abuse and theft.

Stop by The Neighborhood Pharmacy, 2204 Mount Vernon Avenue, where the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office will collect potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs and other medications for destruction. These drugs can be a source of supply for illegal use and an unacceptable risk to public health and safety.

The Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria and Neighborhood Pharmacy staff will also be available to answer questions and share helpful information.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away – both potential safety and health hazards.

This program also supports the goals of the Eco-City Alexandria initiative to promote a place where people can live healthier and economically productive lives while reducing their impact on the environment.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency’s Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products as Pollutants (PPCPs) website, studies have shown that pharmaceuticals (including prescription and over-the-counter therapeutic drugs) are present in our nation's waterbodies, and further research suggests that certain drugs may cause ecological harm. Proper disposal of prescription and over-the-counter therapeutic drugs can help reduce the impact to aquatic and ecological life.

This one-day effort, in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration, is intended to bring national focus to the issue of increasing pharmaceutical controlled substance abuse. The service is free and anonymous; no questions asked.
