 e collecting unwanted medications outside the Neighborhood Pharmacy at 22
 04 Mount Vernon Avenue as part of a local Drug Take Back Day. The Alexand
 ria Police Department and the Alexandria Sheriff's Office\, with cooperat
 ion from the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria\, are sta
 ffing multiple drop off sites for Drug Take Back.\n\nDrop off potentially
  dangerous expired\, unused and unwanted prescription drugs and other med
 ications for safe disposal and destruction. These drugs can be a source o
 f supply for illegal use and an unacceptable risk to public health and sa
 fety\, particularly in the case of opioids. \n\nThis initiative addresses
  a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aw
 are that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible 
 to diversion\, misuse and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused p
 rescription drugs are obtained from family and friends\, including from t
 he home medicine cabinet. In addition\, many Americans do not know how to
  properly dispose of their unused medicine\, often flushing them down the
  toilet or throwing them away - both potential safety and health hazards.
