arTest/Detail.aspx?si=29431\n\nHave unwanted and expired prescription med
ications? Dispose of them safely at the "Drug Take Back" to prevent pill
abuse and theft. \n\nOfficers from the Alexandria Police Department will
be collecting unwanted medications at Fire Station 210 as part of this lo
cal Drug Take Back day. The Alexandria Police Department and the Alexandr
ia Sheriff's Office\, with cooperation from the Substance Abuse Preventio
n Coalition of Alexandria\, are staffing multiple drop off sites for Drug
Take Back.\n\nDrop off potentially dangerous expired\, unused and unwant
ed prescription drugs and other medications for safe disposal and destruc
tion. These drugs can be a source of supply for illegal use and an unacce
ptable risk to public health and safety\, particularly in the case of opi
oids. \n\nThis initiative addresses a vital public safety and public heal
th issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that languish in ho
me cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion\, misuse and abuse. Studi
es show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from fa
mily and friends\, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition\
, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medi
cine\, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away - both p
otential safety and health hazards. \n\nThis program also supports the go
als of the Eco-City Alexandria initiative to promote a place where people
can live healthier and economically productive lives while reducing thei
r impact on the environment. \n\nThe service is free and anonymous\; no q
