 abuse and theft. \n\nOfficers from the Alexandria Police Department will 
 be collecting unwanted medications at Fire Station 210 as part of this na
 tional Drug Take Back Day initiated by the Drug Enforcement Administratio
 n. The Alexandria Police Department and the Alexandria Sheriff's Office\,
  with cooperation from the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexan
 dria\, are staffing multiple drop off sites for Drug Take Back.\n\nDrop o
 ff potentially dangerous expired\, unused and unwanted prescription drugs
  and other medications for safe disposal and destruction. These drugs can
  be a source of supply for illegal use and an unacceptable risk to public
  health and safety\, particularly in the case of opioids. \n\nThis initia
 tive addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americ
 ans are not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highl
 y susceptible to diversion\, misuse and abuse. Studies show that a majori
 ty of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends\, in
 cluding from the home medicine cabinet. In addition\, many Americans do n
 ot know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine\, often flushing
  them down the toilet or throwing them away - both potential safety and h
 ealth hazards. \n\nThis program also supports the goals of the Eco-City A
 lexandria initiative to promote a place where people can live healthier a
 nd economically productive lives while reducing their impact on the envir
