Cities Committee at Buzz Bakeshop (901 Slaters Lane) to learn about Swed
ish Coffee culture (fika)! As part of Alexandria's sister city relationsh
ip with Helsingborg\, Sweden\, this event celebrates a beloved Swedish tr
adition. In Sweden\, fika is part of everyday life and a big part of thei
r culture. Fika is when you take time for a colleague or friend and have
a coffee (or tea)\, ideally enjoyed with a yummy baked treat. So much mor
e than enjoying the coffee and cookie\, fika allows you to slow down and
appreciate the good things in life. Many Swedes consider it almost essent
ial to fika everyday (many companies add a clause to contracts stating th
at employees are entitled to fika breaks!). Kristina's Swede treats will
give a fika introduction with traditional pastries. A limited number of f
ika-boxes will also be available for purchase ($20). They are listed as a
separate event in the Alexandria Shop event page. A fika-box includes tw
o cinnamon buns\, two chocolate cuts\, and two raspberry caves. The cinna
mon bunds have gluten\, lactose\, and eggs. If you have allergies\, pleas
 e let us know.\n\nLocation: Buzz Bakery\, 901 Slater's Lane.\nFees: $10\n

on the grounds of historic Lloyd House and on Queen Street in Old Town Al
exandria. Hosted by the Office of Historic Alexandria in partnership with
the Virginia Association of Cider Makers\, this event includes cider tas
 tings\, a souvenir cider cup\, live music\, tavern games\, and a little h
istory too! \n\nWhile enjoying a selection of Virginia ciders\, learn mor

 year\, for the nation's 250th anniversary\, the VA250 Mobile Museum Exper
ience ("Out of Many\, One") will be open on Queen Street during the event
. The museum features hands-on exhibits\, innovative technology\, and sto

\nCider was a popular beverage in 18th- and early 19th-century Alexandria
and was offered at area taverns\, including Gadsby's Tavern. Thomas Jeff
erson cultivated eighteen varieties of apples in his orchard at Monticell
o (planted between 1769 and 1814). Today\, there are over 30 different ap
ple varieties grown specifically for cider production throughout Virginia
. Cider is fermented like wine\, not brewed like beer. One of the most co
mmon misconceptions amongst consumers is that hard cider is made in just
'one' style rather than the many different styles that are produced. Virg
inia Cider Week was established by the Virginia General Assembly in 2012
to recognize this growing segment of Virginia's economy.\n\nTickets are $
50 per person (through November 1) and $55 (November 1-20)\, and $25 desi
