Suminagashi meditative printmaking
Suminagashi, or “floating ink,” is an ancient Japanese printmaking technique that dates back to the 12th century. Sumi ink is made of soot from pine trees it naturally floats on water.

Japanese monks used suminagashi as a meditative practice to create beautiful patterns on paper for scrolls and prints. The key is forming a bond with water in a manner that is more of a collaboration than a controlled technique.

Commissioned by Alexandria's Office of the Arts, printmaker Sto Len will give an introduction to his own water-art practice then teach participants how to make prints using this process, while discussing our relationship to water.

Space is limited to 20 households in the City of Alexandria. Registered participants will be provided with an art kit that includes some of the supplies needed to participate. One kit per household.

Registered participants will receive the participation link 24 hours prior to the event. To join the online program, participants will need access to the internet and the ability to listen and talk with the artist (camera and microphone) with their computer, tablet, or phone.

This virtual workshop is part of RENEWAL, a series of community projects and programs that Sto Len has developed as the City of Alexandria Public Art Program's first artist in residence at AlexRenew.

RENEWAL aims to renew our relationship to local water by providing an opportunity for the public to engage with waterfront sites in new ways that both raise awareness and engagement around the city’s water, especially areas connected to the future location of AlexRenew’s RiverRenew tunnel project.
