63628\n\nSafely dispose of unneeded prescription and over-the-counter med
ications\, including those prescribed by veterinarians\, during National
 Prescription Drug Take Back Day on October 24 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.\n\nAs
part of the Drug Enforcement Agency's National Drug Take Back Day\, the
Alexandria Police Department\, Alexandria Sheriff's Office\, and Alexandr
ia Health Department\, with cooperation from the Substance Abuse Preventi
on Coalition of Alexandria\, are staffing multiple drop-off locations for
safe medication disposal.\n\nDrop off unused or expired medication from
 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the following locations:\n\n- Alexandria Police
Headquarters (3600 Wheeler Ave.)\n- Alexandria Fire Station 210 (5255 Ei
senhower Ave.)\n- The Neighborhood Pharmacy of Del Ray (2204 Mt. Vernon A
ve.)\n- Walgreens Pharmacy (3614 King St.)\n\n\nNo needles are accepted a
t these sites.\n\n\nThis initiative addresses a vital public safety and p
ublic health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that lang
uish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion\, misuse and ab
use. Studies show that the majority of misused prescription drugs are obt
ained from family and friends\, including from home medicine cabinets. In
addition\, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of unused
medication\, often flushing it down the toilet or throwing it away - both
potential safety and health hazards.\n\nDrug take back days and permanen
t drop boxes also support the goals of the Eco-City Alexandria initiative
to promote a place where people can live healthier and economically prod
uctive lives\, while reducing their impact on the environment.\n\nThe ser
vice is free and anonymous\; no questions asked.\n\nTo learn more about w
