ar/Detail.aspx?si=35076\n\nHave unwanted and expired prescription medicat
ions? Dispose of them safely at the "Drug Take Back" to prevent pill abus
e and theft. \n\nOfficers from the Alexandria Police Department will be c
ollecting unwanted medications outside First Baptist Church as part of th
is national Drug Take Back Day. The Alexandria Police Department and the
Alexandria Sheriff's Office\, with cooperation from the Substance Abuse P
revention Coalition of Alexandria\, are staffing multiple drop off sites
for Drug Take Back.\n\nDrop off potentially dangerous expired\, unused an
d unwanted prescription drugs and other medications for safe disposal and
destruction. These drugs can be a source of supply for illegal use and a
n unacceptable risk to public health and safety\, particularly in the cas
e of opioids. \n\nThis initiative addresses a vital public safety and pub
lic health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that langui
sh in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion\, misuse and abus
 e. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained
from family and friends\, including from the home medicine cabinet. In a
ddition\, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unu
sed medicine\, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away
 - both potential safety and health hazards. \n\nThis program also support
s the goals of the Eco-City Alexandria initiative to promote a place wher
e people can live healthier and economically productive lives while reduc
ing their impact on the environment. \n\nThe service is free and anonymou
s\; no questions asked.\n\nLocation: First Baptist Church\, 2932 King St.
