DESCRIPTION:To verify info please see https://apps.alexandriava.gov/Calend
ar/Detail.aspx?si=29434\n\nHave unwanted and expired prescription medicat
ions? Dispose of them safely at the "Drug Take Back" to prevent pill abus
e and theft. \n\nDeputies from the Alexandria Sheriff's Office will be co
llecting unwanted medications outside the Neighborhood Pharmacy at 2204 M
ount Vernon Avenue as part of a local Drug Take Back Day. The Alexandria
Police Department and the Alexandria Sheriff's Office\, with cooperation
from the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria\, are staffin
g multiple drop off sites for Drug Take Back.\n\nDrop off potentially dan
gerous expired\, unused and unwanted prescription drugs and other medicat
ions for safe disposal and destruction. These drugs can be a source of su
pply for illegal use and an unacceptable risk to public health and safety
\, particularly in the case of opioids. \n\nThis initiative addresses a v
ital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware
that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to d
iversion\, misuse and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused presc
ription drugs are obtained from family and friends\, including from the h
ome medicine cabinet. In addition\, many Americans do not know how to pro
perly dispose of their unused medicine\, often flushing them down the toi
let or throwing them away - both potential safety and health hazards. \n\
nThis program also supports the goals of the Eco-City Alexandria initiati
ve to promote a place where people can live healthier and economically pr
oductive lives while reducing their impact on the environment. \n\nThe se
