 ollecting unwanted medications outside First Baptist Church as part of th
 e national Drug Take Back Day initiated by the Drug Enforcement Administr
 ation. The Alexandria Police Department and the Alexandria Sheriff's Offi
 ce\, with cooperation from the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Al
 exandria and Alexandria Renew Enterprises\, are holding three drop off si
 tes for Drug Take Back.\n\nDrop off potentially dangerous expired\, unuse
 d and unwanted prescription drugs and other medications for safe disposal
  and destruction. These drugs can be a source of supply for illegal use a
 nd an unacceptable risk to public health and safety. \n\nThis initiative 
 addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans a
 re not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly sus
 ceptible to diversion\, misuse and abuse. Studies show that a majority of
  abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends\, includi
 ng from the home medicine cabinet. In addition\, many Americans do not kn
 ow how to properly dispose of their unused medicine\, often flushing them
  down the toilet or throwing them away - both potential safety and health
  hazards. \n\nThis program also supports the goals of the Eco-City Alexan
 dria initiative to promote a place where people can live healthier and ec
 onomically productive lives while reducing their impact on the environmen
