 e and theft. \n\nOfficers from the Alexandria Police Department will be c
 ollecting unwanted medications outside APD headquarters as part of the na
 tional Drug Take Back Day initiated by the Drug Enforcement Administratio
 n. The Alexandria Police Department and the Alexandria Sheriff's Office\,
  with cooperation from the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexan
 dria and Alexandria Renew Enterprises\, are holding three drop off sites 
 for Drug Take Back.\n\nDrop off potentially dangerous expired\, unused an
 d unwanted prescription drugs and other medications for safe disposal and
  destruction. These drugs can be a source of supply for illegal use and a
 n unacceptable risk to public health and safety. \n\nThis initiative addr
 esses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are n
 ot aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly suscept
 ible to diversion\, misuse and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abu
 sed prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends\, including f
 rom the home medicine cabinet. In addition\, many Americans do not know h
 ow to properly dispose of their unused medicine\, often flushing them dow
 n the toilet or throwing them away - both potential safety and health haz
 ards. \n\nThis program also supports the goals of the Eco-City Alexandria
  initiative to promote a place where people can live healthier and econom
 ically productive lives while reducing their impact on the environment. \
