 expired prescription medications? Dispose of them safely at the "Drug Take
  Back" to prevent pill abuse and theft. \n\nOfficers from the Alexandria P
 olice Department will be collecting unwanted medications outside police he
 adquarters as part of this national Drug Take Back Day. The Alexandria Pol
 ice Department and the Alexandria Sheriff's Office\, with cooperation from
  the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria\, are staffing mul
 tiple drop off sites for Drug Take Back.\n\nDrop off potentially dangerous
  expired\, unused and unwanted prescription drugs and other medications fo
 r safe disposal and destruction. These drugs can be a source of supply for
  illegal use and an unacceptable risk to public health and safety\, partic
 ularly in the case of opioids. \n\nThis initiative addresses a vital publi
 c safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medici
 nes that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion\, m
 isuse and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs
  are obtained from family and friends\, including from the home medicine c
 abinet. In addition\, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose o
 f their unused medicine\, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing 
 them away - both potential safety and health hazards. \n\nThis program als
 o supports the goals of the Eco-City Alexandria initiative to promote a pl
 ace where people can live healthier and economically productive lives whil
 e reducing their impact on the environment. \n\nThe service is free and an
