Dispose of them safely at the "Drug Take Back" to prevent pill abuse and theft. \n\nOfficers from the Alexandria P olice Department will be collecting unwanted medications outside First Bap tist Church as part of this national Drug Take Back Day. The Alexandria Po lice Department and the Alexandria Sheriff's Office\, with cooperation fro m the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria\, are staffing mu ltiple drop off sites for Drug Take Back.\n\nDrop off potentially dangerou s expired\, unused and unwanted prescription drugs and other medications f or safe disposal and destruction. These drugs can be a source of supply fo r illegal use and an unacceptable risk to public health and safety\, parti cularly in the case of opioids. \n\nThis initiative addresses a vital publ ic safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medic ines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion\, misuse and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drug s are obtained from family and friends\, including from the home medicine cabinet.
