  Back" to prevent pill abuse and theft. \n\nOfficers from the Alexandria P
 olice Department will be collecting unwanted medications outside First Bap
 tist Church as part of this national Drug Take Back Day. The Alexandria Po
 lice Department and the Alexandria Sheriff's Office\, with cooperation fro
 m the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria\, are staffing mu
 ltiple drop off sites for Drug Take Back.\n\nDrop off potentially dangerou
 s expired\, unused and unwanted prescription drugs and other medications f
 or safe disposal and destruction. These drugs can be a source of supply fo
 r illegal use and an unacceptable risk to public health and safety\, parti
 cularly in the case of opioids. \n\nThis initiative addresses a vital publ
 ic safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medic
 ines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion\, 
 misuse and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drug
 s are obtained from family and friends\, including from the home medicine 
 cabinet. In addition\, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose 
 of their unused medicine\, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing
  them away - both potential safety and health hazards. \n\nThis program al
 so supports the goals of the Eco-City Alexandria initiative to promote a p
 lace where people can live healthier and economically productive lives whi
 le reducing their impact on the environment. \n\nThe service is free and a
