 expired prescription medications? Dispose of them safely at the "Drug Take
  Back" to prevent pill abuse and theft. \n\nOfficers from the Alexandria P
 olice Department will be collecting unwanted medications at Fire Station 2
 10 as part of this national Drug Take Back day. The Alexandria Police Depa
 rtment and the Alexandria Sheriff's Office\, with cooperation from the Sub
 stance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria\, are staffing multiple dr
 op off sites for Drug Take Back.\n\nDrop off potentially dangerous expired
 \, unused and unwanted prescription drugs and other medications for safe d
 isposal and destruction. These drugs can be a source of supply for illegal
  use and an unacceptable risk to public health and safety\, particularly i
 n the case of opioids. \n\nThis initiative addresses a vital public safety
  and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that
  languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion\, misuse an
 d abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obt
 ained from family and friends\, including from the home medicine cabinet. 
 In addition\, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their 
 unused medicine\, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them awa
 y - both potential safety and health hazards. \n\nThis program also suppor
 ts the goals of the Eco-City Alexandria initiative to promote a place wher
 e people can live healthier and economically productive lives while reduci
