 expired prescription medications? Dispose of them safely at the "Drug Take
  Back" to prevent pill abuse and theft. \n\nDeputies from the Alexandria S
 heriff's Office will be collecting unwanted medications outside the Neighb
 orhood Pharmacy at 2204 Mount Vernon Avenue as part of this national Drug 
 Take Back Day initiated by the Drug Enforcement Administration. The Alexan
 dria Police Department and the Alexandria Sheriff's Office\, with cooperat
 ion from the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria\, are staf
 fing multiple drop off sites for Drug Take Back.\n\nDrop off potentially d
 angerous expired\, unused and unwanted prescription drugs and other medica
 tions for safe disposal and destruction. These drugs can be a source of su
 pply for illegal use and an unacceptable risk to public health and safety\
 , particularly in the case of opioids. \n\nThis initiative addresses a vit
 al public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware tha
 t medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diver
 sion\, misuse and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused prescripti
 on drugs are obtained from family and friends\, including from the home me
 dicine cabinet. In addition\, many Americans do not know how to properly d
 ispose of their unused medicine\, often flushing them down the toilet or t
 hrowing them away - both potential safety and health hazards. \n\nThis pro
 gram also supports the goals of the Eco-City Alexandria initiative to prom
 ote a place where people can live healthier and economically productive li
 ves while reducing their impact on the environment. \n\nThe service is fre
