 r soil collection ceremony to recognize the lives and lynchings of Joseph 
 McCoy and Benjamin Thomas. The Soil Collection ceremony honors the lives a
 nd deaths of McCoy and Thomas and features placing soil into jars that wil
 l be given to the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI). Community members will b
 e welcome to take part in the soil ceremony\, drawing soil from two wooden
  vessels designed and built by 8th grade students at Jefferson-Houston IB 
 School. The soil jars will be taken by the community to Montgomery\, Alaba
 ma and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice as part of the ACRP pil

 AHTC) invite you to an open house to celebrate the launch of the new south
 ern route of the African American Waterfront Heritage Trail! The event is 
 free\, but registration is requested.\n\nLearn more about history along th
 e waterfront as we recreate a sample of the stops along the trail inside t
 he Lyceum. Enjoy an opportunity to "talk history" with members of the AAHT
 C. Each stop highlights the importance of Black history in Alexandria\, wh
 at archaeological and historical research and reveal about the past\, and 
 the impacts of community history initiatives like this one. Prominent and 
 lesser known stories of African American people\, places\, and neighborhoo
 ds from the time of Alexandria's founding through the 20th century will be
  featured. Remarks begin at 11:00 a.m. Light refreshments will be served. 
 \n\nThe African American Waterfront Heritage Trails illuminate the history
  of the African American community over a span of centuries. These trails 
 highlight the contributions of Black Alexandrians\, free and enslaved\, to
  the history of Alexandria's waterfront. The South Trail Route consists of
  19 stops and is the second in a series of trails covering the waterfront.
  The North Trail Route\, launched in 2021\, includes 11 stops. Together th
 e two trails span a little over three miles from Montgomery St. to the sou
 th end of Jones Point Park. The trails can be experienced on a computer or
  as a StoryMap on a smartphone as you walk the trails along the Potomac Ri
 ver. The African American Waterfront Heritage Trail Committee is made up o
 f volunteer community members and historians and is supported by staff fro
 m the Alexandria Black History Museum and Alexandria Archaeology.  \n\nPar
 king is limited in the Alexandria History Museum at The Lyceum parking lot

 C.'s Black community is barely visible to the modern-day visitor. Fort Ren
 o was a bustling neighborhood in which men\, women\, and children lived\, 
 died\, loved\, worked\, worshipped\, and played. Brian Taylor (author of F
 ighting for Citizenship [UNC Press\, 2020])\, Miriam Gusevich (Catholic Un
 iversity) and Martin Paddack (Howard University) will share their work on 
 the history of the Fort Reno neighborhood and their efforts to bring this 
 history to the public. It builds on Brian Taylor's "On the Fort": The Fort

 lot\, the Clark burial site\, and the Jackson Cemetery. The meeting will c
 onvene at the Museum parking lot for a walk to each of the four burial sit
 es. The Beitzell Fence Company\, based in Gainesville\, Virginia\, was awa
 rded the project. Installation is scheduled to take place the last week of
  September. Staff from the Office of Historic Alexandria\, including a Cit

 uth's exploitation of a clause in the 13th Amendment. He describes the way

  Allen\, a woman living with her husband and four children as a free black
  woman in Washington D.C. who was enslaved by James Birch\, imprisoned in 
 Alexandria\, and tried for the murder of her two youngest children. A jury
  acquitted her by reason of insanity\, and\, with John Quincy Adams' assis
 tance\, she regained her freedom. This is story of African American agency
  in the most desperate of circumstances?when an enslaved mother feels deat
 h is better for her children than life in bondage. Dr. Alison Mann serves 
 as the Historian at the National Museum of American Diplomacy\, U.S. Depar
 tment of State as a subject matter expert in the field of diplomatic histo
 ry\, 19th century American history\, public history\, and education. Befor
 e joining the museum\, she was Assistant Professor of History at Abraham B
 aldwin Agricultural College in Tifton\, GA\, teaching courses in public hi
 story\, multicultural America\, and early American history.? She has also 
 taught diplomatic history and the history of American slavery and abolitio
 nism at the University of New Hampshire and Franklin Pierce University and
  worked as a Park Ranger for Boston African American National Historic Sit
 e. She holds an MA and Ph.D. from the University of New Hampshire\, and a

 th Revealed: The 1837 Case of Dorcas Allen\," Dr. Alison Mann will discuss
  a traumatic event that occurred at 1315 Duke Street in 1837 and its legal
  implications and aftermath that was the basis of her 2010 doctoral disser
 tation. In August 1837\, a Georgetown resident sold Dorcas Allen and her f
 our children to James H. Birch\, a District of Columbia slave trader. He t
 ransported them to the Duke Street pen\, and that evening Allen killed her
  two youngest children and was restrained from harming the others. In Octo
 ber\, she appeared before the District Court in Alexandria and pleaded not
  guilty by reason of insanity. Her case drew the attention of prominent wh
 ite men\, such as then-Congressman John Quincy Adams and District Attorney
  Francis Scott Key\, but remains a story largely unknown. This is story of
  African American agency in the most desperate of circumstances?when an en

  the numerous crises it created. Some speculated wildly in human property 
 to ward off inflation or to buy shares in the slaveholding future for whic
 h they fought. Still others traded people to keep them from achieving the 
 freedom the war offered. For those held in slavery\, meanwhile\, the survi
 ving slave trade dramatically shaped the ways in which they encountered li
 berty\, yanking many back into bondage while inspiring others to risk flig
