 blic meeting on Saturday\, July 31 at 10-11:30 am in the City of Alexandri
 a's Fort Ward Park to discuss marking\, protection and recognition of key 
 cemetery areas and burial sites related to the African American Fort commu
 nity.  Join City staff from the Office of Historic Alexandria who will lea
 d a discussion on issues and ideas for demarcating and memorializing these
  sacred areas.  Attendees will meet City staff in the parking lot behind F
 ort Ward Museum\, and walk to the four major burial sites.  In the event o
 f rain\, the meeting will be held in the reception hall at Oakland Baptist
  Church\, 3408 King Street\, Alexandria.\n\nFort Ward Park's cemetery area
 s and burial sites are associated with the post-Civil War African American
  community known as "The Fort\," which developed on the grounds and vicini
 ty of the present-day Park beginning in the 1870s.  The sites that are the
  focus of discussion are: The Old Grave Yard\, established at least by 189
 7\; the Adams family burial site\, which includes the grave of community m
 atriarch Clara Adams\; the Clark family burial site\; and the Jackson Ceme
 tery\, established on land purchased by Fort resident James Jackson in 188
 4 that was once part of the earlier Civil War Union fort.  City archaeolog
 ists and historians will lead discussions at each area that provide contex
 t and considerations for possible demarcation of some sites\, preservation
  issues\, and additional approaches to memorialization.  Public feedback w
 ill be gathered for implementing long-term approaches to care and recognit

  Union regiment that was stationed at Fort Ward during the Civil War.   Th

 firing demonstrations in the restored Northwest bastion of the fort at 11

 Ward Museum's annual Civil War Christmas in Camp program on Saturday\, Dec
 ember 11\, 2021\, from 12-4 p.m.  This popular family-oriented event featu
 res a patriotic Civil War Santa Claus\, reenactors in winter camp settings
 \, period decorations\, fort tours\, and kids activities.  The suggested d
 onation is $2 per person\, and $5 for families.\n\nThe program features a 
 Civil War-era Union Santa Claus\, based on an 1863 cover of Harper's Weekl
 y by artist Thomas Nast\, who will interact with the public\, welcome chil
 dren to the reconstructed Officers' Hut\, and visit soldiers in camp.  Ree
 nactors will interpret army life in winter camps that are decorated for th
 e season\, and celebrate by opening Christmas boxes from home\, singing ca
 rols of the period around the campfire\, and preparing holiday meals.  The
  Museum will be decorated with festive greenery and a Victorian parlor tre
 e.  Soldier-led tours of the historic fort will be presented\, and childre
 n can make a Christmas card or ornament.  A variety of Civil War books and

 \n\nThe annual living history event features military and civilian reenact
 ors in camp settings in and around the historic fort.  The program include
 s camp life activities\, infantry and artillery drills and firing demonstr
 ations\, equipment displays\, and civilian impressions.  Among the living 
 history units participating are the 28th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry\
 , Co. B\, the 3rd U.S. Regular Infantry\, Co. K\, and the 1st U.S. Artille
 ry\, Co. D.  Special interpretations include a U.S. Army Quartermaster ten
 t\, a Union company surgeon\, a Northern schoolmarm who interprets 19th-ce
 ntury education and pastimes for children\, and a soldier in the reconstru
 cted Officers' Hut portraying the daily routine and living quarters of an 
 officer in the Defenses of Washington.  At 3 p.m.\, the 8th Green Machine 
 Regiment Band will perform a concert of Civil War music on the Museum lawn
 .  This historical brass ensemble\, sponsored by George Mason University\,
  presents music of the 19th century on authentic period instruments.\n\n\n

 lot\, the Clark burial site\, and the Jackson Cemetery. The meeting will c

 rded the project. Installation is scheduled to take place the last week of
