Participatin g vehicles will include 19th-century suction fire engines and hose reel ca rriages. Suction engines\, invented in the early 19th century\, drew water from wells\, hydrants\, and other sources through a hose\, and provided a powerful and constant stream of water. The first hoses were typically mad e in 50-foot lengths\, and only a few pieces could be carried on the fire engine itself\, so additional vehicles were created specifically to carry extra lengths of hose. \n\nFire was a constant danger in a town of most ly wooden buildings\, where open flames provided heat\, light\, and cookin g. The Friendship\, Sun\, Relief\, Hydraulion\, and Star volunteer fire c ompanies served the community faithfully\, particularly during enormous bl azes in 1827\, 1855\, and 1871. \n\nFriendship Firehouse Museum's historic firefighting vehicles includes the Prettyman Hose Reel Carriage\, built i n Alexandria in 1858 by coachmaker\, and Friendship Fire Company member\, Robert Prettyman. It was ornately decorated and fitted with two large bell s to sound the alarm as the vehicle bounced through Alexandria's streets. Thanks to fundraising efforts led by the Friendship Veterans Fire Engine A ssociation\, the Prettyman hose carriage recently underwent much needed co nservation\, returning to Friendship Firehouse in 2022. \n\nOver 15 addit ional hose reel carriages and suction engines from throughout the region w ill be on display outside of the Friendship Firehouse Museum on the 100 bl ock of South Alfred Street. Friendship & Firefighting in Alexandria is spo nsored by the Friendship Veterans Fire Engine Association and the Office o f Historic Alexandria. Admission is free.\n\n\nLocation: Friendship Fireho use Museum\, 107 S. Even though the war destroyed th e cotton economy that had long underpinned American slavery and fueled the slave trade\, Confederates used slave commerce to shape their experiences of the war\, whether to help them mobilize for the conflict or to weather the numerous crises it created. Some speculated wildly in human property to ward off inflation or to buy shares in the slaveholding future for whic h they fought. Still others traded people to keep them from achieving the freedom the war offered. For those held in slavery\, meanwhile\, the survi ving slave trade dramatically shaped the ways in which they encountered li berty\, yanking many back into bondage while inspiring others to risk flig ht. \n\nDr. Robert Colby is an assistant professor at the University of Mi ssissippi and is the author of An Unholy Traffic: Slave Trading in the Civ il War South.
