There will be a community celebration in the park on March 21 to commemorate th e occasion. \n\nBe among the first to see the new installation and meet th e artist. Enjoy a day at the waterfront while DJ Kalo spins from 2 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. \n\nWrought\, Knit\, Labors\, Legacies is the second in the Site See: New Views in Old Town annual public art series\, and will be on disp lay through November 2020. It follows SOFTlab's Mirror Mirror\, which was on view in 2019.\n\nJeyifous' concept frames Alexandria's African American history through the lens of the city's industrial and merchant history fr om the 17th to 20th centuries. Once a prosperous port city that was home t o one of the largest domestic slave trading firms in the country\, Alexand ria was a major center for shipping and manufacturing with an economy inex tricably tied to the work of enslaved and free African Americans.\n\nWroug ht\, Knit\, Labors\, Legacies seeks to stitch Alexandria's story together\ , featuring symbols that represent Alexandria's merchant and manufacturing history\, inclusive of fishing\, flour\, tobacco and railways. The ground mural incorporates African American quilting and textile traditions\, whi ch are historically tied to storytelling and oral tradition. When viewed a s a whole\, the pattern becomes an abstract grid or map\, with the manufac turing icons appearing throughout. From this colorful and rich surface\, f our large figures will face the water. Ornate metal profiles will be wrapp ed in sculptural seating platforms that are illuminated in low light.\n\nT he Site See public-art series highlights Waterfront Park as a civic space\ , fostering community engagement and interactions with the temporary insta llations. The artwork is informed by the historic waterfront and neighbori ng community. The compelling\, unique art attracts repeat visits from the metropolitan area and beyond. \n\n\nLocation: Waterfront Park\, 1 Prince S t.\nContact Email: arts@alexandriava.gov\nAudience: Anyone may attend\nTag s: Arts\, Family\, King Street\, Marina\, Old Town\, Parks\, Public Art & Memorials\, Recreation\, Teens\, Tourism\, Visual Arts\, Waterfront\n\nImp ort this event into your calendar: http://apps.alexandriava.gov/CalendarTe st/iCal.aspx?id=1&si=29809 DTEND:20200321T233000Z DTSTAMP:20200309T180708Z DTSTART:20200321T180000Z GEO:38.803380;-77.039641 LOCATION:Waterfront Park\, 1 Prince St. SEQUENCE:6 STATUS:CANCELLED SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Welcome: Wrought\, Knit\, Labors\, Legacies TRANSP:TRANSPARENT UID:08cff313-685d-462c-9ebe-475024e50560 X-COA-DTSTAMP:20200309T180708Z END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
