In the years following the Civil War\, a significant effort was made to commemorate and honor the service and sacri fices of its participants through public monuments\, paintings and prints. The memorial movement that emerged in the last quarter of the 19th centu ry and into the early 20th century was fueled by the growth of veterans' o rganizations\, civic interest in honoring those who served\, and the natio nal effort to adorn public spaces. This lecture will present an overview of commemorative Civil War art\, with selected examples ranging from sculp tural monuments to cycloramas.
