DESCRIPTION:The Department of Community and Human Services is continuing Me
 ntal Health First Aid (MHFA) training and certification for laypersons and
  paraprofessionals in Alexandria. MHFA is an 8-hour training on skills to 
 help persons who are developing a mental health problem or experiencing a 
 mental health crisis.

 tes the initial help given to a person showing signs of mental illness or 
 a mental health crisis. The 8-hour course teaches risk factors\, warning s
 igns and symptoms of mental health and substance use disorders\; the effec
 ts of the illnesses and an overview of treatments\; and a five-step action
  plan for helping someone with symptoms.\n\nThis training does not prepare
  someone to diagnose or provide treatment. It is designed to help paraprof
 essionals and laypersons provide support until an individual is linked to 
 professional resources. MHFA is not recommended ofr licensed mental health
  providers. \n\nThe dates for this session are Sept 15 and 17\, 2014\, 1-5
  p.m. Registration is open until filled. Limit 20 participants per class. 
 Attendees of the full 8-hour course will receive a three-year certificatio
