Dispose of them safely at a convenient location with the "Take-Back" initiative to prevent pill abuse and theft.\n\nStop by First Baptist Church\, 2932 King Street\, where the Alexandria Police D epartment and Alexandria Sheriff's Office\, with cooperation from the Subs tance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria\, are collecting potentiall y dangerous expired\, unused and unwanted prescription drugs and other med ications for destruction. These drugs can be a source of supply for illega l use and an unacceptable risk to public health and safety. \n\nThis initi ative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americ ans are not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion\, misuse and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends\, inclu ding from the home medicine cabinet. In addition\, many Americans do not k now how to properly dispose of their unused medicine\, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away - both potential safety and health hazards.\n\nThis program also supports the goals of the Eco-City Alexandri a initiative to promote a place where people can live healthier and econom ically productive lives while reducing their impact on the environment. \n \nAccording to the Environmental Protection Agency's Pharmaceuticals and P ersonal Care Products as Pollutants (PPCPs) website\, studies have shown t hat pharmaceuticals (including prescription and over-the-counter therapeut ic drugs) are present in our nation's waterbodies\, and further research s uggests that certain drugs may cause ecological harm. Proper disposal of p rescription and over-the-counter therapeutic drugs can help reduce the imp act to aquatic and ecological life. \n\nThis one-day effort\, in partnersh ip with the Drug Enforcement Administration\, is intended to bring nationa l focus to the issue of increasing pharmaceutical controlled substance abu se. The service is free and anonymous\; no questions asked. \n\n\nLocation : First Baptist Church\, 2932 King St.\nContact Person: Ashley Hildebrandt \nContact Phone: 703.746.6600\nContact Email: ashley.hildebrandt@alexandri ava.gov\nAudience: Anyone may attend\nTags: Criminal Justice\, Eco-City\, Health\, King Street\, Public Safety\, West End\n\nImport this event into your calendar: http://apps.alexandriava.gov/Calendar/iCal.aspx?id=1&si=706 7 DTEND:20131026T180000Z DTSTAMP:20130924T190605Z DTSTART:20131026T140000Z GEO:38.819632;-77.078415 LOCATION:First Baptist Church\, 2932 King St. SEQUENCE:6 STATUS:CONFIRMED SUMMARY:Drug Take Back Day at First Baptist TRANSP:TRANSPARENT UID:3220357b-63de-484f-a368-1afa84505cc7 X-COA-DTSTAMP:20130924T190605Z END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
