Vernon Ave.,Public Safety DESCRIPTION:To make sure the time\, location\, and other aspects have not c hanged\, or to share this event with your friends\, please see https://app s.alexandriava.gov/Calendar/Detail.aspx?si=7066\n\nHave unused and expired prescription medications? Dispose of them safely at a convenient location with the "Take-Back" initiative to prevent pill abuse and theft.\n\nStop by the Del Ray Pharmacy\, 2204 Mount Vernon Avenue\, where the Alexandria Police Department and the Alexandria Sheriff's Office\, with cooperation f rom the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria\, are collectin g potentially dangerous expired\, unused and unwanted prescription drugs a nd other medications for destruction. These drugs can be a source of suppl y for illegal use and an unacceptable risk to public health and safety. \n \nThis initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinet s are highly susceptible to diversion\, misuse and abuse. Studies show tha t a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and fri ends\, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition\, many Americ ans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine\, often f lushing them down the toilet or throwing them away - both potential safety and health hazards.\n\nThis program also supports the goals of the Eco-Ci ty Alexandria initiative to promote a place where people can live healthie r and economically productive lives while reducing their impact on the env ironment. \n\nAccording to the Environmental Protection Agency's Pharmaceu ticals and Personal Care Products as Pollutants (PPCPs) website\, studies have shown that pharmaceuticals (including prescription and over-the-count er therapeutic drugs) are present in our nation's waterbodies\, and furthe r research suggests that certain drugs may cause ecological harm. Proper d isposal of prescription and over-the-counter therapeutic drugs can help re duce the impact to aquatic and ecological life. \n\nThis one-day effort\, in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration\, is intended to b ring national focus to the issue of increasing pharmaceutical controlled s ubstance abuse. The service is free and anonymous\; no questions asked. \n \n\nLocation: No Location Specified\nContact Person: Ashley Hildebrandt\n Contact Phone: 703.746.6600\nContact Email: ashley.hildebrandt@alexandriav a.gov\nAudience: Anyone may attend\nTags: Criminal Justice\, Del Ray\, Eco -City\, Health\, Mt.
