Dispose of them safely at a convenient location with the "Take-Back" initiative to prevent pill abuse and theft.\n\nThe A lexandria Police Department and the Alexandria Sheriff's Office\, with coo peration from the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria\, are collecting potentially dangerous expired\, unused and unwanted prescripti on drugs and other medications for destruction. These drugs can be a sourc e of supply for illegal use and an unacceptable risk to public health and safety. \n\nThis initiative addresses a vital public safety and public hea lth issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that languish in ho me cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion\, misuse and abuse. Studie s show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from fami ly and friends\, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition\, m any Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine \, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away - both potent ial safety and health hazards.\n\nThis program also supports the goals of the Eco-City Alexandria initiative to promote a place where people can liv e healthier and economically productive lives while reducing their impact on the environment. \n\nAccording to the Environmental Protection Agency's Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products as Pollutants (PPCPs) website\ , studies have shown that pharmaceuticals (including prescription and over -the-counter therapeutic drugs) are present in our nation's waterbodies\, and further research suggests that certain drugs may cause ecological harm . Proper disposal of prescription and over-the-counter therapeutic drugs c an help reduce the impact to aquatic and ecological life. \n\nThis one-day effort\, in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration\, is int ended to bring national focus to the issue of increasing pharmaceutical co ntrolled substance abuse. The service is free and anonymous\; no questions asked. \n\n\nLocation: Police Headquarters\nContact Person: Ashley Hildeb randt\nContact Phone: 703.746.6600\nContact Email: ashley.hildebrandt@alex andriava.gov\nAudience: Anyone may attend\nTags: Criminal Justice\, Eco-Ci ty\, Health\, Public Safety\, West End\n\nImport this event into your cale ndar: http://apps.alexandriava.gov/Calendar/iCal.aspx?id=1&si=7065 DTEND:20131026T180000Z DTSTAMP:20130924T190516Z DTSTART:20131026T140000Z GEO:38.806875;-77.092330 LOCATION:Police Headquarters SEQUENCE:5 STATUS:CONFIRMED SUMMARY:Drug Take Back Day at Police HQ TRANSP:TRANSPARENT UID:d6fafa64-55ff-4d6e-8cf3-2a37a6bf7134 X-COA-DTSTAMP:20130924T190516Z END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
