 red prescription medications? Dispose of them safely at the "Drug Take Bac
 k" to prevent pill abuse and theft. \n\nOfficers from the Alexandria Polic
 e Department will be collecting unwanted medications outside police headqu
 arters as part of this national Drug Take Back Day. The Alexandria Police 
 Department and the Alexandria Sheriff's Office\, with cooperation from the
  Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria\, are staffing multipl
 e drop off sites for Drug Take Back.\n\nDrop off potentially dangerous exp
 ired\, unused and unwanted prescription drugs and other medications for sa
 fe disposal and destruction. These drugs can be a source of supply for ill
 egal use and an unacceptable risk to public health and safety\, particular
 ly in the case of opioids. \n\nThis initiative addresses a vital public sa
 fety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines 
 that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion\, misus
 e and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are
  obtained from family and friends\, including from the home medicine cabin
 et. In addition\, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of th
 eir unused medicine\, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them
  away - both potential safety and health hazards. \n\nThis program also su
 pports the goals of the Eco-City Alexandria initiative to promote a place 
 where people can live healthier and economically productive lives while re
 ducing their impact on the environment. \n\nThe service is free and anonym
