Dispose of them safely at the "Drug Take Bac k" to prevent pill abuse and theft. \n\nOfficers from the Alexandria Polic e Department will be collecting unwanted medications outside First Baptist Church as part of this national Drug Take Back Day. The Alexandria Police Department and the Alexandria Sheriff's Office\, with cooperation from th e Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria\, are staffing multip le drop off sites for Drug Take Back.\n\nDrop off potentially dangerous ex pired\, unused and unwanted prescription drugs and other medications for s afe disposal and destruction. These drugs can be a source of supply for il legal use and an unacceptable risk to public health and safety\, particula rly in the case of opioids. \n\nThis initiative addresses a vital public s afety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion\, misu se and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs ar e obtained from family and friends\, including from the home medicine cabi net.
