 red prescription medications? Dispose of them safely at the "Drug Take Bac
 k" to prevent pill abuse and theft. \n\nOfficers from the Alexandria Polic
 e Department will be collecting unwanted medications at their headquarters
  as part of this local Drug Take Back Day. The Alexandria Police Departmen
 t and the Alexandria Sheriff's Office\, with cooperation from the Substanc
 e Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria\, are staffing multiple drop of
 f sites for Drug Take Back.\n\nA ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 1
 0:30 a.m. for the newly installed permanent drop box at police headquarter
 s\, which will be accessible 24 hours a day.\n\nDrop off potentially dange
 rous expired\, unused and unwanted prescription drugs and other medication
 s for safe disposal and destruction. These drugs can be a source of supply
  for illegal use and an unacceptable risk to public health and safety\, pa
 rticularly in the case of opioids. \n\nThis initiative addresses a vital p
 ublic safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware that me
 dicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion
 \, misuse and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription d
 rugs are obtained from family and friends\, including from the home medici
 ne cabinet. In addition\, many Americans do not know how to properly dispo
 se of their unused medicine\, often flushing them down the toilet or throw
 ing them away - both potential safety and health hazards. \n\nThis program
  also supports the goals of the Eco-City Alexandria initiative to promote 
 a place where people can live healthier and economically productive lives
