Dispose of them safely at the "Drug Take Bac k" to prevent pill abuse and theft. \n\nDeputies from the Alexandria Sheri ff's Office will be collecting unwanted medications outside the Neighborho od Pharmacy at 2204 Mount Vernon Avenue as part of a local Drug Take Back Day. The Alexandria Police Department and the Alexandria Sheriff's Office\ , with cooperation from the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexan dria\, are staffing multiple drop off sites for Drug Take Back.\n\nDrop of f potentially dangerous expired\, unused and unwanted prescription drugs a nd other medications for safe disposal and destruction. These drugs can be a source of supply for illegal use and an unacceptable risk to public hea lth and safety\, particularly in the case of opioids. \n\nThis initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans ar e not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susce ptible to diversion\, misuse and abuse. Studies show that a majority of ab used prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends\, including f rom the home medicine cabinet.
