Dispose of them safely at the "Drug Take Bac k" to prevent pill abuse and theft. \n\nOfficers from the Alexandria Polic e Department will be collecting unwanted medications outside First Baptist Church as part of this national Drug Take Back Day initiated by the Drug Enforcement Administration. The Alexandria Police Department and the Alexa ndria Sheriff's Office\, with cooperation from the Substance Abuse Prevent ion Coalition of Alexandria\, are staffing multiple drop off sites for Dru g Take Back.\n\nDrop off potentially dangerous expired\, unused and unwant ed prescription drugs and other medications for safe disposal and destruct ion. These drugs can be a source of supply for illegal use and an unaccept able risk to public health and safety\, particularly in the case of opioid s. \n\nThis initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health i ssue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that languish in home ca binets are highly susceptible to diversion\, misuse and abuse. Studies sho w that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family an d friends\, including from the home medicine cabinet.
