Dispose of them safely at the "Drug Take Bac k" to prevent pill abuse and theft. \n\nDeputies from the Alexandria Sheri ff's Office will be collecting unwanted medications outside the Neighborho od Pharmacy at 2204 Mount Vernon Avenue for a local Drug Take Back Day. Th e Alexandria Police Department and the Alexandria Sheriff's Office\, with cooperation from the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria\, are staffing multiple drop off sites for Drug Take Back.\n\nDrop off poten tially dangerous expired\, unused and unwanted prescription drugs and othe r medications for safe disposal and destruction. These drugs can be a sour ce of supply for illegal use and an unacceptable risk to public health and safety\, particularly in the case of opioids. \n\nThis initiative address es a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not a ware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion\, misuse and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused pr escription drugs are obtained from family and friends\, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition\, many Americans do not know how to pr operly dispose of their unused medicine\, often flushing them down the toi let or throwing them away - both potential safety and health hazards. \n\n This program also supports the goals of the Eco-City Alexandria initiative to promote a place where people can live healthier and economically produ ctive lives while reducing their impact on the environment. \n\nThe servic e is free and anonymous\; no questions asked.\n\nLocation: No Location Sp ecified\nContact Person: PIO Amy Bertsch\nContact Phone: 703.746.4114\nAud ience: Anyone may attend\nTags: APDCalendar\, Criminal Justice\, Del Ray\, Eco-City\, Health\, Mt.
