 k" to prevent pill abuse and theft. \n\nOfficers from the Alexandria Polic
 e Department will be collecting unwanted medications at Police Headquarter
 s as part of Drug Take Back Day. The Alexandria Police Department and the 
 Alexandria Sheriff's Office\, with cooperation from the Substance Abuse Pr
 evention Coalition of Alexandria\, are staffing multiple drop off sites fo
 r Drug Take Back.\n\nDrop off potentially dangerous expired\, unused and u
 nwanted prescription drugs and other medications for safe disposal and des
 truction. These drugs can be a source of supply for illegal use and an una
 cceptable risk to public health and safety. \n\nThis initiative addresses 
 a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not awar
 e that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to 
 diversion\, misuse and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused presc
 ription drugs are obtained from family and friends\, including from the ho
 me medicine cabinet. In addition\, many Americans do not know how to prope
 rly dispose of their unused medicine\, often flushing them down the toilet
  or throwing them away - both potential safety and health hazards. \n\nThi
 s program also supports the goals of the Eco-City Alexandria initiative to
  promote a place where people can live healthier and economically producti
 ve lives while reducing their impact on the environment. \n\nThe service i
