Dispose of them safely at the "Drug Take-Bac k" to prevent pill abuse and theft. \n\nOfficers from the Alexandria Polic e Department will be collecting unwanted medications at Police Headquarter s as part of this national Drug Take Back Day initiated by the Drug Enforc ement Administration. The Alexandria Police Department and the Alexandria Sheriff's Office\, with cooperation from the Substance Abuse Prevention Co alition of Alexandria\, are staffing multiple drop off sites for Drug Take Back.\n\nDrop off potentially dangerous expired\, unused and unwanted pre scription drugs and other medications for safe disposal and destruction. T hese drugs can be a source of supply for illegal use and an unacceptable r isk to public health and safety. \n\nThis initiative addresses a vital pub lic safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medi cines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion\, misuse and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription dru gs are obtained from family and friends\, including from the home medicine cabinet.
