Dispose of them safely at Police Headquarters through the "Take-Back" initiative to prevent pill abuse and theft.\n\nOff icers will be collecting unwanted medications at APD Headquarters as part of the national Drug Take Back Day initiated by the Drug Enforcement Admin istration. The Alexandria Police Department and the Alexandria Sheriff's O ffice\, with cooperation from the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria\, are staffing multiple drop off sites for Drug Take Back. \n\n Drop off potentially dangerous expired\, unused and unwanted prescription drugs and other medications for safe disposal and destruction. These drugs can be a source of supply for illegal use and an unacceptable risk to pub lic health and safety. \n\nThis initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion\, misuse an d abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obt ained from family and friends\, including from the home medicine cabinet.
