 k" to prevent pill abuse and theft. \n\nDeputies from the Alexandria Sheri
 ff's Office will be collecting unwanted medications outside The Neighborho
 od Pharmacy at 2204 Mount Vernon Avenue. The Substance Abuse Prevention Co
 alition of Alexandria will also be there to share information about safe d
 isposal of medication.\n\nDrop off potentially dangerous expired\, unused 
 and unwanted prescription drugs and other medications for safe disposal an
 d destruction. These drugs can be a source of supply for illegal use and a
 n unacceptable risk to public health and safety. \n\nThis initiative addre
 sses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not
  aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptibl
 e to diversion\, misuse and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused 
 prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends\, including from t
 he home medicine cabinet. In addition\, many Americans do not know how to 
 properly dispose of their unused medicine\, often flushing them down the t
 oilet or throwing them away - both potential safety and health hazards. \n
 \nThis program also supports the goals of the Eco-City Alexandria initiati
 ve to promote a place where people can live healthier and economically pro
 ductive lives while reducing their impact on the environment. \n\nThe serv
