Dispose of them safely outside Police Headquar ters through the "Take-Back" initiative to prevent pill abuse and theft.\n \nThe Alexandria Police Department and the Alexandria Sheriff's Office\, w ith cooperation from the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandri a\, are collecting potentially dangerous expired\, unused and unwanted pre scription drugs and other medications for destruction. These drugs can be a source of supply for illegal use and an unacceptable risk to public heal th and safety. \n\nThis initiative addresses a vital public safety and pub lic health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that languis h in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion\, misuse and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained fr om family and friends\, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addit ion\, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused m edicine\, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away - both potential safety and health hazards.\n\nThis program also supports the go als of the Eco-City Alexandria initiative to promote a place where people can live healthier and economically productive lives while reducing their impact on the environment. \n\nAccording to the Environmental Protection A gency's Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products as Pollutants (PPCPs) w ebsite\, studies have shown that pharmaceuticals (including prescription a nd over-the-counter therapeutic drugs) are present in our nation's waterbo dies\, and further research suggests that certain drugs may cause ecologic al harm. Proper disposal of prescription and over-the-counter therapeutic drugs can help reduce the impact to aquatic and ecological life. \n\nThis one-day effort\, in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration\, is intended to bring national focus to the issue of increasing pharmaceut ical controlled substance abuse. The service is free and anonymous\; no qu estions asked.\n\nLocation: Police Headquarters\nContact Person: Ashley Hi ldebrandt\nContact Phone: 703.746.6600\nContact Email: ashley.hildebrandt@ alexandriava.gov\nAudience: Anyone may attend\nTags: Criminal Justice\, Ec o-City\, Health\, Public Safety\, West End\n\nImport this event into your calendar: http://apps.alexandriava.gov/Calendar/iCal.aspx?id=1&si=11396 DTEND:20150926T180000Z DTSTAMP:20150827T183913Z DTSTART:20150926T140000Z GEO:38.806875;-77.092330 LOCATION:Police Headquarters SEQUENCE:4 STATUS:CONFIRMED SUMMARY:Drug Take Back Day at Police HQ TRANSP:TRANSPARENT UID:b7259c5a-dc78-457a-9143-f9acd9449d3e X-COA-DTSTAMP:20150827T183913Z END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
