Dispose of them safely at the "Drug Take-Bac k" to prevent pill abuse and theft.\n\nStop by The Neighborhood Pharmacy\, 2204 Mount Vernon Avenue\, where the Alexandria Sheriff's Office will col lect potentially dangerous expired\, unused and unwanted prescription drug s and other medications for destruction. These drugs can be a source of su pply for illegal use and an unacceptable risk to public health and safety. \n\nThe Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria and Neighborhoo d Pharmacy staff will also be available to answer questions and share help ful information.\n\nThis initiative addresses a vital public safety and pu blic health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that langui sh in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion\, misuse and abuse . Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained f rom family and friends\, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addi tion\, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine\, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away - bot h potential safety and health hazards.\n\nThis program also supports the g oals of the Eco-City Alexandria initiative to promote a place where people can live healthier and economically productive lives while reducing their impact on the environment. \n\nAccording to the Environmental Protection Agency's Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products as Pollutants (PPCPs) website\, studies have shown that pharmaceuticals (including prescription and over-the-counter therapeutic drugs) are present in our nation's waterb odies\, and further research suggests that certain drugs may cause ecologi cal harm. Proper disposal of prescription and over-the-counter therapeutic drugs can help reduce the impact to aquatic and ecological life. \n\nThis one-day effort\, in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration\ , is intended to bring national focus to the issue of increasing pharmaceu tical controlled substance abuse.
