Dispose of them safely at the "Drug Take-Bac k" to prevent pill abuse and theft.\n\nStop by the "Well Ray" health event in the 2200 block of Mount Vernon Avenue\, where the Alexandria Sheriff's Office\, Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria and the Neigh borhood Pharmacy\, are collecting potentially dangerous expired\, unused a nd unwanted prescription drugs and other medications for destruction. Thes e drugs can be a source of supply for illegal use and an unacceptable risk to public health and safety. \n\nThis initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicin es that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion\, mi suse and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends\, including from the home medicine ca binet. In addition\, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine\, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing t hem away - both potential safety and health hazards.\n\nThis program also supports the goals of the Eco-City Alexandria initiative to promote a plac e where people can live healthier and economically productive lives while reducing their impact on the environment. \n\nAccording to the Environment al Protection Agency's Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products as Pollu tants (PPCPs) website\, studies have shown that pharmaceuticals (including prescription and over-the-counter therapeutic drugs) are present in our n ation's waterbodies\, and further research suggests that certain drugs may cause ecological harm. Proper disposal of prescription and over-the-count er therapeutic drugs can help reduce the impact to aquatic and ecological life. \n\nThe service is free and anonymous\; no questions asked.\n\nLocat ion: No Location Specified\nContact Person: Deputy Valarie Wright\nContac t Phone: 703.746.5017\nAudience: Anyone may attend\nTags: Criminal Justice \, Del Ray\, Eco-City\, Health\, Mt.
