How was h e regarded in his public career\, not only in the South\, but also in the North\, the region that had provided his electoral victory? How did he dea l with allies and opponents? How did he change the concept of the Presiden cy and the structure of our republic? Why was and is he still a controvers ial figure? The time and manner of his death placed him almost beyond deta ched historical examination\, but this sesquicentennial commemoration offe rs an opportunity to survey different views of Lincoln over time and into the present.\n\nStephen Smith is a reader and independent scholar of histo ry. He has B.A. and M.A. degrees in history from Western Kentucky Universi ty and was a Rotary Foundation Scholar at the University of Nottingham in England. He also holds a J.D. degree from Duke University and completed th e certificate course at the Lay School of Theology of Virginia Theological Seminary. He has practiced law privately and in the civil service\, autho red several reviews and articles for various publications\, and given pres entations on historical and other topics.
