There wil l be a community celebration in the park on March 21 to commemorate the oc casion. \n\nBe among the first to see the new installation and meet the ar tist. Enjoy a day at the waterfront while DJ Kalo spins from 2 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. \n\nWrought\, Knit\, Labors\, Legacies is the second in the Site See : New Views in Old Town annual public art series\, and will be on display through November 2020. It follows SOFTlab's Mirror Mirror\, which was on v iew in 2019.\n\nJeyifous' concept frames Alexandria's African American his tory through the lens of the city's industrial and merchant history from t he 17th to 20th centuries. Once a prosperous port city that was home to on e of the largest domestic slave trading firms in the country\, Alexandria was a major center for shipping and manufacturing with an economy inextric ably tied to the work of enslaved and free African Americans.\n\nWrought\, Knit\, Labors\, Legacies seeks to stitch Alexandria's story together\, fe aturing symbols that represent Alexandria's merchant and manufacturing his tory\, inclusive of fishing\, flour\, tobacco and railways. The ground mur al incorporates African American quilting and textile traditions\, which a re historically tied to storytelling and oral tradition. When viewed as a whole\, the pattern becomes an abstract grid or map\, with the manufacturi ng icons appearing throughout. From this colorful and rich surface\, four large figures will face the water. Ornate metal profiles will be wrapped i n sculptural seating platforms that are illuminated in low light.\n\nThe S ite See public-art series highlights Waterfront Park as a civic space\, fo stering community engagement and interactions with the temporary installat ions. The artwork is informed by the historic waterfront and neighboring c ommunity. The compelling\, unique art attracts repeat visits from the metr opolitan area and beyond. \n\n\nLocation: Waterfront Park\, 1 Prince St.\n Contact Email: arts@alexandriava.gov\nAudience: Anyone may attend\nTags: A rts\, Family\, King Street\, Marina\, Old Town\, Parks\, Public Art & Memo rials\, Recreation\, Teens\, Tourism\, Visual Arts\, Waterfront\n\nImport this event into your calendar: http://apps.alexandriava.gov/Calendar/iCal. aspx?id=1&si=29809 DTEND:20200321T233000Z DTSTAMP:20200309T180708Z DTSTART:20200321T180000Z GEO:38.803380;-77.039641 LOCATION:Waterfront Park\, 1 Prince St. SEQUENCE:6 STATUS:CANCELLED SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Welcome: Wrought\, Knit\, Labors\, Legacies TRANSP:TRANSPARENT UID:08cff313-685d-462c-9ebe-475024e50560 X-COA-DTSTAMP:20200309T180708Z END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT CATEGORIES:Arts,Family,Holiday Event,King St. Metro,King Street,Marina,Muse ums,Old & Historic Alexandria,Old Town,Performing Arts,Recreation,Teens,To rpedo Factory Art Center,Tourism,Visual Arts,Waterfront DESCRIPTION:To make sure the time\, location\, and other aspects have not c hanged\, or to share this event with your friends\, please see https://app s.alexandriava.gov/Calendar/Detail.aspx?si=29458\n\nEvery year\, the regio n shakes off winter with the arrival of the world-famous pink and white ch erry blossoms. The lack of revenue from performances\, classes and exhibitions has led to critical financial problems for the arts. Most artists and org anizations have had to cancel seasons and indoor events for the foreseeabl e future\, transitioning to smaller\, outdoor events and virtual presentat ions.\n\n"We knew as the weather gets colder\, gathering will become more challenging\," says Alexandria Arts Alliance Board President Melinda Kernc . "There is amazing and inspirational art happening all around us\, and we want Alexandria residents to experience it\, even if they are staying hom e. These artists and arts organizations desperately need support from the community they serve so well. This entertaining\, collaborative showcase p rovides a way to ensure the arts will emerge strong when the pandemic subs ides."\n\nHomegrown Restaurant Group will donate 10% from all take-out ord ers mentioning ACT 4 #ArtsALX on the evening of the event. will speak about the artist team's public artwork Tunnel Vision r ealized for the new WMATA (or Metro) office building in Alexandria\, VA th at officially opened last fall.\n\nSuspended from the ceiling and position ed in the southwest corner of the building's lobby\, Tunnel Vision can be experienced from the lobby\, the street\, and the adjacent plaza. From eac h of these viewpoints\, the artwork alludes to the Metro stations in drama tically different ways: from the side as a convex object that loosely evok es the coffered stations and Metro's gridded logo\, and from below as a co ncave volume making the station clearly visible and emphasizing its dramat ic one-point perspective.\n\nThe event is jointly hosted by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA)'s Art in Transit Program and the City of Alexandria's Office of the Arts.\n\nLocation: WMATA Offices @ 2401 Mill Road\, Alexandria\, VA 22314\n\nAbout FreelandBuck:\n\nFreelandB uck is both an artistic collaboration and an architectural practice. Based in both Los Angeles and New York City\, FreelandBuck is led by Brennan Bu ck and David Freeland. Established in 2010\, the office makes buildings\, spaces\, and objects that engage the public through layers of meaning\, il lusion\, and visual effect. \n\n\nAbout WMATA Art in Transit:\n\nThe Art i n Transit Program of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority in corporates visual and performing arts throughout the Metrorail system and at Metro facilities to enhance the experience of customers\, the communiti es it serves\, and the Capital region at large.\n\nTo learn more about the Art in Transit program\, visit wmata.com/arts.\n\nAbout Alexandria's Offi ce of the Arts:\n\nThe Office of The Arts promotes the value of arts and c ulture in Alexandria by nurturing\, investing in and celebrating the creat ive contributions of artists and arts organizations.
