Interlude: Unfinished Works features the work of 21 artist s from across the globe. It is on view Saturday\, December 9\, 2017 throug h Sunday\, January 21\, 2018. \n\nUnfinished artwork gives insight into th e artist's hand and methodology. The unresolved and open ended nature of t he art gives the viewer new context of the themes and meanings of the work s created. Juried by Curator Betsy Johnson\, the exhibition creates a dial ogue on what it means for art to be "resolved". \n\n"Arguably as daunting as facing a blank canvas\, identifying the finished state of an artwork ca n prove difficult\; at times even impossible\," said Johnson. "There are c ountless stories of artists who have rounded completion only to change the ir mind\, radically alter the work\, and start anew. Even after a work is completed\, there is nothing forcing it to stay that way. In many ways\, d ue to the very open-endedness of the creative endeavor\, artworks are-by t heir nature-in a perpetual state of unresolved."\n\nThese concepts in Inte rlude: Unfinished Works are represented through a wide diversity of media. Diane Charnov's Unfinished SAT: Pencils Down is a silkscreen transfer of an incomplete SAT scantron onto unglazed raw clay\, encapsulating that fee ling of dread at handing in an incomplete test. Gray Matter by Melissa For kner Lesher is an installation of two piles of packing tape rolled into cy linders covered with remnants of marble dust and charcoal powder. It displ ays the individual components of a larger project created without assembla ge. \n\nHarleen Moon's Happy Dust is an installation and 'zine that catego rizes evidence of a crime\, left intentionally open-ended for the viewer t o piece together the clues. Britt Thomas's video Duets: Faithless captures an intimate moment between a young couple\, moving in a slow-motion loop\ , creating suspended tension that is never resolved. \n\n"I am interested in the concept of art as process\," said Target Gallery Director\, Leslie Mounaime. "So much of what sets contemporary artwork apart is due to the p rocess or method in which it's made. This exhibition allows us to hit paus e and capture this state of impermanence." \n\nThe participating artists a re: \n\nFabiola Alvarez Yurcisin\, Bethesda\, MD\nTommy Bobo\, Washington\ , D.C.\nMalina Busch\, London\, U.K.\nDiane Charnov\, McLean\, VA \nChloe Feldman Emison\, Cambridge\, MA\nElaine Florimonte\, South Riding\, VA \nM elissa Forkner Lesher\, Centre Hall\, PA\nNicole Fossi\, Washington\, D.C. \nKay Gordon\, Brooklyn\, NY\nKathleen Greco\, Southampton\, PA\nScott Gr oeniger\, Honolulu\, Hawaii\nSarah Hardesty\, Falls Church\, VA \nHaeley K yong\, Franklin Lakes\, NJ\nMarisa LaGuardia\, Youngstown\, OH\nKaty Mixon \, Brooklyn\, NY\nHarleen Moon\, Fulton\, MA\nBarbara Morrison Januskiewic z\, Arlington\, VA \nJulie Nagle\, Jersey City\, NJ\nAmy Schissel\, Morgan town\, WV\nBushra Shamma\, Falls Church\, VA \nBritt Thomas\, Houston\, TX \n \nThe public reception for Interlude will be during Torpedo Factory's L ate Shift event\, Friday\, December 15\, 7 - 9 pm\, with Johnson's comment s at 7:30 pm. There wil l be a community celebration in the park on March 21 to commemorate the oc casion. \n\nBe among the first to see the new installation and meet the ar tist. Enjoy a day at the waterfront while DJ Kalo spins from 2 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. \n\nWrought\, Knit\, Labors\, Legacies is the second in the Site See : New Views in Old Town annual public art series\, and will be on display through November 2020. It follows SOFTlab's Mirror Mirror\, which was on v iew in 2019.\n\nJeyifous' concept frames Alexandria's African American his tory through the lens of the city's industrial and merchant history from t he 17th to 20th centuries. Once a prosperous port city that was home to on e of the largest domestic slave trading firms in the country\, Alexandria was a major center for shipping and manufacturing with an economy inextric ably tied to the work of enslaved and free African Americans.\n\nWrought\, Knit\, Labors\, Legacies seeks to stitch Alexandria's story together\, fe aturing symbols that represent Alexandria's merchant and manufacturing his tory\, inclusive of fishing\, flour\, tobacco and railways. The ground mur al incorporates African American quilting and textile traditions\, which a re historically tied to storytelling and oral tradition. When viewed as a whole\, the pattern becomes an abstract grid or map\, with the manufacturi ng icons appearing throughout. From this colorful and rich surface\, four large figures will face the water. Ornate metal profiles will be wrapped i n sculptural seating platforms that are illuminated in low light.\n\nThe S ite See public-art series highlights Waterfront Park as a civic space\, fo stering community engagement and interactions with the temporary installat ions. The artwork is informed by the historic waterfront and neighboring c ommunity. The compelling\, unique art attracts repeat visits from the metr opolitan area and beyond. \n\n\nLocation: Waterfront Park\, 1 Prince St.\n Contact Email: arts@alexandriava.gov\nAudience: Anyone may attend\nTags: A rts\, Family\, King Street\, Marina\, Old Town\, Parks\, Public Art & Memo rials\, Recreation\, Teens\, Tourism\, Visual Arts\, Waterfront\n\nImport this event into your calendar: http://apps.alexandriava.gov/Calendar/iCal. aspx?id=1&si=29809 DTEND:20200321T233000Z DTSTAMP:20200309T180708Z DTSTART:20200321T180000Z GEO:38.803380;-77.039641 LOCATION:Waterfront Park\, 1 Prince St. SEQUENCE:6 STATUS:CANCELLED SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Welcome: Wrought\, Knit\, Labors\, Legacies TRANSP:TRANSPARENT UID:08cff313-685d-462c-9ebe-475024e50560 X-COA-DTSTAMP:20200309T180708Z END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT CATEGORIES:Arts,Class,Eco-City,Environment,Family,Nature,Public Art & Memor ials,Streams,Summer Fun for Kids,Teens,Visual Arts DESCRIPTION:To make sure the time\, location\, and other aspects have not c hanged\, or to share this event with your friends\, please see https://app s.alexandriava.gov/Calendar/Detail.aspx?si=32049\n\nSuminagashi\, or "floa ting ink\," is an ancient Japanese printmaking technique that dates back t o the 12th century. Sumi ink is made of soot from pine trees it naturally floats on water. \n\nJapanese monks used suminagashi as a meditative pract ice to create beautiful patterns on paper for scrolls and prints. The key is forming a bond with water in a manner that is more of a collaboration t han a controlled technique. \n\nCommissioned by Alexandria's Office of the Arts\, printmaker Sto Len will give an introduction to his own water-art practice then teach participants how to make prints using this process\, w hile discussing our relationship to water.\n\nSpace is limited to 20 house holds in the City of Alexandria. will speak about the artist team's public artwork Tunnel Vision r ealized for the new WMATA (or Metro) office building in Alexandria\, VA th at officially opened last fall.\n\nSuspended from the ceiling and position ed in the southwest corner of the building's lobby\, Tunnel Vision can be experienced from the lobby\, the street\, and the adjacent plaza. From eac h of these viewpoints\, the artwork alludes to the Metro stations in drama tically different ways: from the side as a convex object that loosely evok es the coffered stations and Metro's gridded logo\, and from below as a co ncave volume making the station clearly visible and emphasizing its dramat ic one-point perspective.\n\nThe event is jointly hosted by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA)'s Art in Transit Program and the City of Alexandria's Office of the Arts.\n\nLocation: WMATA Offices @ 2401 Mill Road\, Alexandria\, VA 22314\n\nAbout FreelandBuck:\n\nFreelandB uck is both an artistic collaboration and an architectural practice. Based in both Los Angeles and New York City\, FreelandBuck is led by Brennan Bu ck and David Freeland.
