 w development along Alexandria's historic shoreline triggered archaeologic
 al work in advance of construction. Project by project\, the remains of wh
 arves\, warehouses\, dwellings and houselots\, industries\, privies\, and 
 four ship hull remnants emerged from the waterlogged depths at the Potomac
  River's edge. The level of preservation under these modern City blocks wa
 s astounding - 20th century slab-built structures nearly perfectly encapsu
 lated entire remains of historic waterfront neighborhoods. This talk will 
 provide an update on the research and preservation of the ships' timbers a
 nd other archaeological finds. Even as individual features and artifact as
 semblages\, these finds are highly significant\, but when taken together a
 long with a wealth of historical documentary data\, a historic maritime la
 ndscape is taking form.\n\nDr. Eleanor Breen is a historical archaeologist
  with two decades of experience on sites in the mid-Atlantic region. As Ci
 ty Archaeologist\, Eleanor currently directs the renowned public archaeolo
 gy program and museum that preserves and interprets the buried history of 
 the City of Alexandria\, Virginia. Eleanor came aboard at an exciting time
  in the program's 40-year history as waterfront excavations yielded ships\

 nstruction crews excavating along the Alexandria waterfront revealed the b
 roken remains of four 18th-century wooden ships in what was once the shore
 line of the Potomac River. To study them\, each ship was disarticulated an
 d the individual timbers were laser scanned\, allowing researchers to virt
 ually reassemble the ships and develop theoretical reconstructions of how 
 they would have looked when they were in use. These highly accurate digita
 l timber models were 3D printed and assembled by a master ship model maker
 \, further informing these reconstructions. The four ships are now on two 
 different preservation journeys. The Hotel Indigo ship was sent to the Con
 servation Research Laboratory at Texas A&M University for conservation by 
 freeze drying\, and the three Robinson Landing ships were submerged in a p
 ond at Ben Brenman Park this spring. Hear the latest findings and discover
  what was learned through digitally reconstructing the four ships.  \n\nCh
 ristopher Dostal is an Assistant Professor with the Department of Anthropo
 logy's Nautical Archaeology Program at Texas A&M University\, where he is 
 also the Director of the Center for Maritime Archaeology and Conservation\
 , the Conservation Research Laboratory\, and the Director of the Analytica
 l Archaeology Laboratory in charge of scanning the four 18th century ships
  excavated in Alexandria. He holds his degrees from Texas A&M University (
 Ph.D.)\, and the University of Colorado at Boulder. His research and work

 or emeritus of Home and Community Life at the National Museum of American 
 History\, Smithsonian Institution\, shares the story of Afong Moy's travel
 s in Virginia\, the District of Columbia\, and Maryland. In November 1849\
 , Afong Moy\, dubbed "The Chinese Lady\," appeared at Lyceum Hall in Alexa
 ndria\, Virginia\, during a tour of the mid-Atlantic states. She had come 
 to New York in 1834 and was the first recognized Chinese woman to arrive i
 n America. For 17 years\, she travelled across the country\, becoming the 
 first Chinese person to receive wide public acclaim and national recogniti
 on. In the later 1830s and 40s\, and by the time she appeared in Alexandri
 a\, Afong Moy had made a transition from a promoter of goods to that of sp

 ar Tenleytown\, an important chapter in the history of Washington's D.C.'s
  Black community is barely visible to the modern-day visitor. Fort Reno wa
 s a bustling neighborhood in which men\, women\, and children lived\, died
 \, loved\, worked\, worshipped\, and played. Brian Taylor (author of Fight
 ing for Citizenship [UNC Press\, 2020])\, Miriam Gusevich (Catholic Univer
 sity) and Martin Paddack (Howard University) will share their work on the 
 history of the Fort Reno neighborhood and their efforts to bring this hist
 ory to the public. It builds on Brian Taylor's "On the Fort": The Fort Ren
 o Community of Washington\, D.C.\, 1861-1951\, the official National Park 
 Service Report and benefits from Gusevich's expertise in urban design and

 evealed: The 1837 Case of Dorcas Allen\," Dr. Alison Mann will discuss a t
 raumatic event that occurred at 1315 Duke Street in 1837 and its legal imp
 lications and aftermath that was the basis of her 2010 doctoral dissertati
 on. In August 1837\, a Georgetown resident sold Dorcas Allen and her four 
 children to James H. Birch\, a District of Columbia slave trader. He trans
 ported them to the Duke Street pen\, and that evening Allen killed her two
  youngest children and was restrained from harming the others. In October\
 , she appeared before the District Court in Alexandria and pleaded not gui
 lty by reason of insanity. Her case drew the attention of prominent white 
 men\, such as then-Congressman John Quincy Adams and District Attorney Fra
 ncis Scott Key\, but remains a story largely unknown. This is story of Afr
 ican American agency in the most desperate of circumstances?when an enslav
 ed mother feels death is better for her children than life in bondage. Dr.
  Alison Mann serves as the Historian at the National Museum of American Di
 plomacy\, U.S. Department of State as a subject matter expert in the field
  of diplomatic history\, 19th century American history\, public history\, 
 and education. Proceeds from this event support Freedom House Museum.\n\nP

 ealized for the new WMATA (or Metro) office building in Alexandria\, VA th
 at officially opened last fall.\n\nSuspended from the ceiling and position
 ed in the southwest corner of the building's lobby\, Tunnel Vision can be 
 experienced from the lobby\, the street\, and the adjacent plaza. From eac
 h of these viewpoints\, the artwork alludes to the Metro stations in drama
 tically different ways: from the side as a convex object that loosely evok
 es the coffered stations and Metro's gridded logo\, and from below as a co
 ncave volume making the station clearly visible and emphasizing its dramat
